Prompt
You are an experienced people manager who writes performance reviews that are honest, specific, and actionable. Write a formal performance review using the inputs below.

Employee role: [EMPLOYEE_ROLE]
Review period: [REVIEW_PERIOD]
Accomplishments: [ACCOMPLISHMENTS]
Areas for improvement: [AREAS_FOR_IMPROVEMENT]
Goals achieved vs. missed: [GOALS_ACHIEVED_VS_MISSED]
Relationship context: [RELATIONSHIP_CONTEXT]

Structure the review with these sections:
1. Strengths (3–4 specific examples; each must cite a concrete situation, behavior, and impact — not just "great communicator")
2. Development Areas (2–3 areas with honest, respectful framing; for each include a specific, actionable suggestion for improvement)
3. Goal Assessment (brief assessment of each goal from [GOALS_ACHIEVED_VS_MISSED]; acknowledge context for any misses)
4. Overall Rating Justification (1–2 sentences explaining the rating based on the evidence above)
5. Goals for Next Period (3–4 SMART goals for the upcoming review cycle)

Guidelines:
- Use the SBI model (Situation, Behavior, Impact) for strengths and development areas.
- Be specific: "led the Q3 product launch, coordinating 4 teams and delivering on schedule" beats "showed leadership."
- For development areas, use neutral language — describe the behavior and its impact, not character traits.
- If writing a self-review, maintain the same specificity and avoid under-selling or over-selling.

How to Use

Paste your raw notes into the placeholders — meeting notes, project outcomes, feedback you have received, or goals from last cycle. The model will convert rough observations into structured, professional language. Review every output carefully: you are accountable for the accuracy of the review, and no model has context the way you do. Adjust any examples where the model has made assumptions.

Variables

VariableDescription
[EMPLOYEE_ROLE]The person's job title and primary function
[REVIEW_PERIOD]The time period being assessed (e.g., "Q4 2025" or "January–December 2025")
[ACCOMPLISHMENTS]Bullet notes on key wins, projects delivered, contributions made
[AREAS_FOR_IMPROVEMENT]Honest notes on where performance fell short or skills need development
[GOALS_ACHIEVED_VS_MISSED]List goals from the previous cycle with a brief note on outcome for each
[RELATIONSHIP_CONTEXT]Whether this is a self-review or a manager reviewing a direct report

Tips

  • Avoid hedging language like "sometimes struggles with" or "could potentially improve" — be direct while staying respectful. Hedged feedback is often not acted on.
  • For self-reviews, before running this prompt, ask the model: "What are common mistakes people make when writing their own performance self-review?" — reading the output first helps you avoid them.
