Short answer: If you want the lowest sticker price and rupee billing, Hostinger's KVM line is cheapest on the pages I read, at the cost of paying upfront for a long term. DigitalOcean costs more per month for similar RAM but says it has a Bangalore datacenter. Hetzner is competitive in Europe and its closest region to India is Singapore. Pick on what you'll run and how long you'll keep it, not on the headline number.
Disclosure: the Hostinger links are affiliate links, and MasterPrompting.net runs on Hostinger. I have no affiliate relationship with Hetzner or DigitalOcean. All figures come from each provider's public pricing page as I read it on 23 Oct 2026. I benchmarked none of these servers.
For most AI apps, the server isn't doing the heavy lifting. The model runs somewhere else and your VPS runs a web app, a database and a proxy. That makes RAM and price the main variables. The plan sizing guide shows how to work out how much you need.
What do equivalent plans cost?
Matching on RAM, using each provider's own page:
| Provider and plan | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Traffic | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger KVM 2 (India page) | 2 | 8 GB | 100 GB NVMe | 8 TB | ₹779/mo, renews ₹1,199/mo |
| Hostinger KVM 2 (US page) | 2 | 8 GB | 100 GB NVMe | 8 TB | $8.79/mo, renews $14.99/mo |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | 4 | 8 GB | 160 GB SSD | 5,000 GiB | $48/mo |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | 2 | 4 GB | 80 GB SSD | 4,000 GiB | $24/mo |
| Hetzner CPX32, Europe | 4 | 8 GB | 160 GB NVMe | 20 TB | €35.99/mo excl. VAT |
| Hetzner CPX32, Singapore | 4 | 8 GB | 160 GB NVMe | 2 TB | €49.49/mo excl. VAT |
| Hetzner CPX22, Singapore | 2 | 4 GB | 80 GB NVMe | 1 TB | €26.99/mo excl. VAT |
Read these with the caveats:
- Different things are priced. Hostinger's monthly figure is its total prepaid price divided by the term. The India page says "All plans are paid upfront" and that the monthly rate reflects the total plan price divided by the number of months in your plan. DigitalOcean and Hetzner list straightforward monthly prices on the pages I read.
- Renewal matters. Hostinger's KVM 2 renews at ₹1,199 a month on the India page, which is still low, but it's 54% above the sale price. Hetzner and DigitalOcean showed a single price.
- My Hetzner table is partial. The page I could read listed its Regular Performance (CPX) line, several of which were marked unavailable in some locations, and had a collapsed "show more" list. Hetzner has other lines that may be cheaper, so check their current page.
- Hardware isn't comparable from a price list. CPU type and disk speed differ between providers. I did not measure anything.
- Hetzner prices exclude VAT and DigitalOcean's page didn't mention tax. Indian GST may apply to any of them. The cart tells you.
On paper, Hostinger's 8 GB plan is a fraction of the price of the 8 GB plans elsewhere. The 4 vCPU Droplet and CPX32 have twice the cores, which matters for CPU-bound work, but not for an app that waits on an API.
Where are the servers?
- Hostinger: its page says "10 data centers across 4 continents, from Boston to Jakarta". The pages I read didn't list India. My earlier Hostinger review says Mumbai, so confirm the locations offered at checkout before you rely on that.
- DigitalOcean: its FAQ says it has a datacenter in Bangalore, India. The page showed no region code.
- Hetzner: Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA. Singapore since 2024. No India.
Does it matter? For an AI app, usually not much. A chat reply spends seconds waiting on tokens, so a 30 ms difference in network round trip disappears. It matters more if your app makes many small database calls per page, or serves a latency-sensitive voice flow (see the latency budget post). Measure with curl -w from the cities your users are in.
What are the catches?
Hostinger: prepaid multi-year terms tie up cash and make switching awkward; the renewal price is the real price. The page offers Docker templates, a Docker manager and app templates including n8n and Dify, which saves setup time. Firewall management is listed on every plan.
DigitalOcean: simple and well documented, and you pay more per GB of RAM. A Bangalore region is a real plus if latency to Indian users matters.
Hetzner: strong price-to-spec in Europe, but outside the EU and US you pay more, and the region closest to you is Singapore. Billing is in euros, so a card with low forex markup matters. See the credit card guide.
All three: you own updates, backups and security. That is the cost of a VPS over a managed platform. Read the hardening checklist either way.
Which should you choose?
- Lowest cost, rupees, and happy to commit for a term: Hostinger KVM 2. It's what this site runs on.
- Need an India region and prefer pay-as-you-go simplicity: look at DigitalOcean's Bangalore option.
- Users mostly in Europe, or want more cores for the money there: Hetzner.
- Barely any traffic, sleeping most of the day: compare against serverless with the cost calculator before buying anything.
Whichever you choose, the app code is the same: Docker Compose, Caddy and the patterns in the Streamlit and FastAPI deployment posts. Pay for the model side in rupees with AICredits if you don't have an international card.
