The best free AI setup for a student in India is two or three tools used well, not ten tried once: a general chatbot for explanations and quizzing, NotebookLM for questions over your own notes, and, if you code, the GitHub Student Developer Pack. That is my recommendation. What follows separates what vendors confirmed on 2026-10-23 from what I could not read.
Which free AI tools can students use today?
Here is what each vendor's own page said when I fetched it. I did not sign up for or test any of them, and none of these pages said anything specific about India beyond what I note.
| Tool | What the page confirms (2026-10-23) | Student-specific offer? |
|---|---|---|
| Claude (Free) | Chat on web, desktop and mobile; web search, file creation and code; memory; up to 5 Projects. No Claude Code, Opus, Research or Claude in Chrome on Free. | None listed for individuals. An Education plan exists for institutions. |
| Gemini (Free) | Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, 15 GB storage. Google AI plans require a personal Google account and age 18+. | The page mentions study features but describes no student discount. India availability of paid plans was not confirmed on the page. |
| NotebookLM (Standard, free with a Gmail account) | 100 notebooks per user, 50 sources per notebook. Limits are "subject to change". | Not a student programme; it is the free tier. |
| GitHub Student Developer Pack | Bundles about 60 partner offers, including GitHub Pro, Codespaces at Pro level, Copilot Student for verified students, Azure credit, and learning platforms. | Yes. Open to students at accredited institutions. Many offers last only while you stay a student. |
Pages I could not read
These returned 403 or 404 when fetched, so I am leaving numbers out:
- ChatGPT Free: OpenAI's pricing and help pages were blocked. I will not quote limits or features. Check openai.com directly.
- Perplexity Free and any student offer: the help-centre articles returned 404. Our Perplexity Pro India guide covers Pro, but check Perplexity's site for current student terms.
- Canva for Education: the education pages returned 403. I could not confirm eligibility or what is included, so verify on Canva's site.
If any of these matter to you, open the vendor page and read the eligibility line before you plan around it.
Does the "free" plan hide anything?
Two catches are worth knowing.
Prompts on unpaid plans may be used for training or review. Google's Gemini API terms say this for unpaid API services. That page is about the developer API, not the consumer Gemini app, so do not assume it carries over; check the Gemini app's privacy settings yourself. Either way, do not paste Aadhaar details, exam-portal logins or anything that identifies you.
Free limits move. Google's NotebookLM page says as much. A workflow that works in September can hit a cap in November. Keep your notes in your own files, not only inside the tool.
A simple workflow that uses the free tools
This is a method, not a tested result. It follows the retrieval idea from our exam-prep prompts post: make the AI test you rather than summarise for you.
- Collect. Put your class notes, textbook chapter PDFs and past papers in one folder. Scan or photograph handwritten notes.
- Ground. Upload one subject's material to a NotebookLM notebook (within the 50-source limit). Ask it to list the ten topics most likely to need revision, based only on your sources. Our NotebookLM study guide has prompts, and the NotebookLM for researchers post covers longer documents.
- Quiz. In a general chatbot (Claude Free or Gemini Free), paste one topic's notes and ask: "Ask me five questions one at a time, wait for my answer, then tell me what I missed." Answer from memory.
- Check. For every fact, formula or date the AI gave you that you did not already know, find it in your textbook. Mark mismatches in a short list. Those are your real revision targets.
Repeat per topic, spaced across days. If you only do one step, do step 3.
If you write code
Apply for GitHub Education with your institution's credentials. The pack page lists JetBrains IDEs, Microsoft 365, Notion, free domains from Namecheap and others, and Copilot Student, each with its own terms and duration. Offers differ, so open each one and read the length of time it lasts before you depend on it.
If you want to call model APIs for a project without paying, see our free LLM API tier comparison. It names what is stated and what is not.
What should you skip?
- Do not pay for a plan before you have hit a free limit twice in the same week. The free vs paid chatbot post has a seven-day test.
- Do not submit AI-written text as your own work. Check your college's rules; they differ.
- Do not rely on any single AI summary of a syllabus. Check it against the official one.
Everything here is a snapshot of 2026-10-23. Plans and student offers change often, so treat the table as a starting point and confirm on the vendor's page before acting.
